The Smallest Things Can Be The Biggest Things
When you see someone in need, what do you do?
Do you help? Do you ask someone else to help? Do you pray? Do you look the other way?
When you get up in the morning, what do you feel?
Do you bounce out of bed? Do you trudge toward the coffee pot? Do you sink further underneath the covers?
When you think about the things you need to do, what is your reaction?
Do you work down a to-do list? Do you procrastinate? Do you jump from one thing randomly to the next depending on how you feel?
When you have something to resolve, what is your response?
Do you extend yourself impulsively? Do you blame and justify yourself? Do you consider how you can best resolve it in a measured way with a clear goal in mind? Do you wait?
Does God have anything to say about the way we approach each situation?
Matthew 6:33
(NKJV et al) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
(CEV) But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well.
Having been through depression and a panic disorder when I was younger, I find the smallest things can be the biggest things when it comes to my approach. I’ve had to teach myself new responses and the reasons why I have these responses. It helps me to remember God’s plan.
When I see someone in need of help, I consider why God’s put me in their path and how He wants me to help them with the skills and knowledge and compassion that He’s given me. When I wake in the morning, I remember God has given this day to me as a gift and wants me to be glad in it. When I think about the things I need to do, I prioritise and consider what’s most relevant and the blessings it will bring in line with God’s purposes. When I have something to resolve, I remember I don’t have anything to be apprehensive about and getting on to it quickly releases me to live in greater freedom.
These little things help me in big ways to live seeking God’s righteousness and kingdom in my life first and letting Him take care of the rest.
When I’m finding things difficult or have any decisions to make, I make it a practise to come back to His Word as my sounding board and launching pad. His purposes are the foundation for every decision I make and every reason I have.
