Be of Good Character
There are many occasions in life where turning point choices are made. We don’t always realise they’re turning point choices until later. So how can we be sure we will make the right choices?
Take care to build the right character. When those turning point moments come, good character will lead us to make good choices. No matter what we might feel like, no matter what others say or do.
1 Corinthians 15:33
(NCV) Do not be fooled: “Bad friends will ruin good habits.”
(NIV) Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Be of unwavering good character.
This is one of the most valuable things to learn and keep remembering. Then life isn’t spent mopping up unnecessary messes, but rather building into blessing after blessing.
Romans 5:4
(NLV) When we have learned not to give up, it shows we have stood the test. When we have stood the test, it gives us hope.
(NIV) perseverance, character; and character, hope.
No matter our age, it’s of great value to consider what we want life to be like and build towards that every day. It’s a type of investment plan toward quality of life. Peace is found to a large measure with how well we follow our conscience. If we have a strong conscience and a well-developed character, our choices will be solid. Character traits of faithfulness and steadfastness will help us to remain standing in honour.
1 Timothy 3:1-4 (NIV)
Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full respect.
3 John 12 (NLT)
Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, as does the truth itself.
This is a wonderful thing to aspire to. That we live in a manner worthy of full respect, and that everyone can speak highly of us.
Good character leads to good choices, which leads to a good life.
Colossians 2:6-7 (NCV)
As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so continue to live in him. Keep your roots deep in him and have your lives built on him. Be strong in the faith, just as you were taught, and always be thankful.
