The Greatest Commodity That Nobody Buys

What is the biggest investment you’ve made? A house? A car? A business?

What did you need to make a salient investment? Did you need inside information? Did you need to acquire knowledge? You would need to trust the source. Did you have sound decision-making skills? No matter the advice you received, you would still need one thing.

Wisdom. And her twin, understanding.

Proverbs 4:7 (NASB)

The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your possessions, acquire understanding.

What does wisdom look like?

James 3:13 (NIV)

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

We might think that humility is quiet. But not so. Wisdom has a voice and raises it above other voices.

Proverbs 1:20-21 (ESV)

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks:

Is it enough to trust in our own wisdom?

Proverbs 2:3-4 (NCV)

Cry out for wisdom, and beg for understanding. Search for it like silver, and hunt for it like hidden treasure.

So, whose wisdom should be trusted?

Proverbs 2:6-8 (NCV)

Only the Lord gives wisdom; he gives knowledge and understanding. He stores up wisdom for those who are honest. Like a shield he protects the innocent. He makes sure that justice is done, and he protects those who are loyal to him.

Here is an amazing exchange. In seeking the highest wisdom and understanding we are required to look at ourselves and our needs honestly. As we honestly hunt for the truth, God freely reveals it to us, but He doesn’t stop there. Proverbs says He also protects and ensures justice.

What is the wise person’s source?

Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

If we invest our life in the principles of God’s kingdom, we look at the fruit it produces. Righteousness, peace and joy. When we invest in these things, we have understood the will of God for life because these things are part of the eternal nature of God and they will protect us.

We can see its outworking in our final scripture, where Isaiah prophecies about Jesus the Messiah and how He will judge the world. True wisdom is the greatest commodity that nobody buys. It begins with the fear of the Lord and ends in His righteousness. As we seek Him, not relying on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6), protection, peace and joy spring from our search.

Isaiah 11:1-4 (BSB)

Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD. And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear, but with righteousness He will judge the poor, and with equity He will decide for the lowly of the earth.
