Be Still and Fear God

Psalm 33:8 (NLT)

Let the whole world fear the Lord, and let everyone stand in awe of him.

Psalm 2:11 (NIV)

Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.

We are fearful of what can harm us. But God doesn’t harm us. He is a God of glory; of weight and power and He expects us to recognise Him. When we don’t, we suffer the consequences because we go our own way, despite what we know to be true.

Exodus 24:17 (NIV)

To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.

And yet, Moses went and met with God there.

Revelation 21:10-11 (NIV)

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

These images are other-worldly. We can see there is a realm far beyond our own, far beyond what we can comprehend.

Yet, we can see God’s glory in our own world with our own eyes. We can see His beauty, His vastness, His immutability in every sunrise and sunset, every storm, every star.

Psalm 19:1 (NCV)

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies announce what his hands have made.

Why does the work of His hands declare His glory? God made it all and He invites us in.

Are we getting a picture of God? His glory? His weight? His power that is above every other power? He is beyond what we can imagine. He is far above anything we can think of ourselves.

Consider what it means to be still and fear God. He has no limitations. We should consider Him with fear and trembling, knowing His ways are not our ways. Even so, He considers us. When we are still He shows Himself to us.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Habakkuk 2:20 (GWT)

The Lord is in his holy temple. All the earth should be silent in his presence.
