Becoming a Follower of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ died for you so you could live with Him forever & have peace. The reason is His love for you.

No matter what’s happened in your life, I need you to know God created you and has a good plan for you here on earth. You may think you're ok without Him, or you may think there’s no hope. God’s ultimate plan for you is to believe in, and accept, that He has an eternal future with Him where you can experience eternal peace. You may experience anxiety, or you may experience a lot of anger. Whatever our struggle, God has a way of freeing us from our dark thoughts and actions within us, around us, or even towards us.

I pray God’s Holy Spirit opens your spirit as you read this, to be able to understand spiritual things with your mind and heart. There is no other way you can accept the truth of God and His good plan for you.

John 3:16-17 (International Standard Version) "For this is how God loved the world: He gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him might not be lost but have eternal life. Because God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Why do we need to be saved?

Because God is holy and we are not. We sin (choose to do things that are not holy), and sin separates us from having a relationship with Him that He earnestly desires.

If He’s God, why can’t He just make us stop sinning?

Because he has given us free choice.

What happens if I choose not to follow?

We all have an eternal life. Our choice in this life determines how we choose to spend eternity. If we choose to dismiss God now, our choice remains for eternity. That separation from the love of God is called hell. Hell has no law. It’s a place of corruption and devastation simply because that’s sin's effect. Satan is the originator of sin. He has a history with God and the bible says Satan is the father of lies (John 8:44 says “he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies”). Sin is everything that is against God, and Satan rules people’s lives here on earth through sin, unless we accept God’s answer to eternal hell.

Nobody likes talking about hell. Nobody wants to think it's a place anyone will end up. So it's easier to choose not to believe. Separation from God eternally is torment because there will be the knowledge of the separation from God, whereas right now, your spirit may not be open to be aware of that separation and what that's going to mean. But after this life you will be. The bible speaks plainly about it, so that people may be warned, and told that the love of God doesn't want that for His creation. God isn't up in the sky like an old Greek painting pointing his finger to zap people who displease Him as though He hates them. He loves you, even the most unlovable parts of you, and He sent Jesus Christ to redeem your life for eternity.

The blood that Jesus Christ carried was perfect and sinless and it is by the sacrifice of His life and blood that we are saved and brought back into relationship with our Creator God, and made holy. This is a righteous, gracious act on behalf of a righteous, gracious God. It is not God’s desire we go to hell, or remain separate from Him on this earth.

Why does it take blood?

Blood carries life. So, God uses the blood of His perfect son to override (use His authority to cancel) our misdemeanours. The wrong things we do here in the natural (what we do, what we can perceive and feel, what we believe) is transferred to the spiritual. All that we do carries an eternal consequence because whatever is spiritual in nature is eternal.

His authority?

Genesis 1:1 – In the beginning God created all things. Firstly, and essentially, that means He has the right to rule over His creation.

In a country, or any society, there is a government, or some type of rulership. Every society has their own laws that people have to live by. Some laws on earth are good. Some are bad. But whatever they are, if people don’t live by the law that governs, they live by the consequences of those laws whether they like it or not. As long as the laws are just, that’s called justice.

God has a kingdom. In a Kingdom there is a king, and there are people who live in His kingdom according to His laws. God’s laws are just because God is love and His love is pure. If a government doesn’t have law based on justice for all, would you agree that law is corrupt? God’s laws and instructions are written in the bible, explaining how His citizens need to live. Even if we think we're pretty good people, God has a higher way, a more holy way. His purposes are for our good. If we don’t choose to live by the laws of His spiritual kingdom, which transcends our own earth’s kingdoms and governments, we will forfeit the benefits of living as citizens of His kingdom when this life is over. Nobody else can make or override that choice for us. Even God. Thankfully, God is a God of mercy – because He is a God of love. That’s why He sent Jesus Christ to die for us, save us to have an eternal relationship with Him, and has sent the Holy Spirit to keep and nurture that relationship.

This describes the trinity of God. God the Father, Jesus the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Once we have confessed Jesus as Lord and Saviour, our spirit is opened to God’s truth and He lives within our spirit to counsel, comfort, govern, and keep us until Jesus Christ returns again to take His family of believers home to live with Him forever. A peace that we can't naturally understand, is manifested in our lives that nothing else can explain or create.

Do we have to choose to confess Jesus as Lord in this lifetime, or can we wait?

We choose in this life whether to believe in Him, to confess Him and to love Him.

Romans 10:9-10 (New International Version)

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

If we wait until after we die, it’s too late. That’s why Jesus came in this life on earth to give us the opportunity to choose whether we want Him in our lives or not. The choice is our own but it has eternal consequences.

Romans 14:10-12 (Berean Study Bible)

For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.” So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

1 John 4:16 says, “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.”

If you choose to believe in God’s love, you choose to believe in a God that is righteous and just, and that the eternal kingdom He rules is a place we were created to be. It’s like coming home. Without the existence of love, we see it's effects in crime, hatred, suspicion, resentment, anger, hostility, fear, division of families, backbiting, deceit, vanity, selfishness and arrogance. We were made in God’s image – which is love – but sin separates us. We can’t fix sin ourselves, or the outcome of what sin means spiritually and eternally, but God has brought reparation through Jesus Christ.

If you want to believe in God and not be separated from His love forever, you don’t have to be. Choose to settle your heart with His, say this prayer, and you’ll have a new life, a lasting hope and a new eternal destiny.

Prayer of Salvation

I repent Lord Jesus Christ for my sin. You are the Saviour of the world. I thank you for loving me so much that you died for me, and rose again to life, taking the power of sin and death away, and giving me a way out of that.

Forgive me for my sin and cleanse me. Relinquish me from all that’s gone on in the past and help me to start living a new life that is based on your truth and your love for me. Thank you that you have now washed me clean of all the lies that have blinded me and the way I’ve lived. I ask you to change my heart and my mind, and I ask that your Holy Spirit fill me and seal me to your Name forever.

Thank you that I am free to live out of joy and peace. I am free to live a life of value and worth, without any plugs and stops. I am free to live a life of healing, because you have given me that, in Jesus name! Amen.

Welcome to the family! Your name is written in the book of life.

Revelation 21:27 says (New Living Translation) says, Nothing evil will be allowed to enter, nor anyone who practices shameful idolatry and dishonesty—but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

To help you along your way, get yourself a bible and start spending time reading it each day. The bible is made up of the old testament and the new testament. You might want to start from Genesis in the Old Testament (it always makes sense to start a book at the beginning.) You might also want to read from the beginning of the New Testament, which is when Jesus Christ came to save us. You might also want to read a Psalm and some of Proverbs each day. Most of Psalms was written by King David, the first king God elected for Israel and is described as a man after God’s own heart. He had a son Solomon, who became the next King. He is described as the wisest man who lived and wrote Proverbs. Solomon also wrote Ecclesiastes. Psalms and Ecclesiastes illustrate these men’s personal journey with God. You’ll be amazed at what you learn!

As you read – whatever you read - pray that the Holy Spirit will help you to understand it. Realise that you won’t understand everything all at once. It takes time to develop a relationship and get to know someone, and that’s true for God and His Word too. Be patient, and be hopeful. God’s word transforms lives and He will do that for you too if you remain in Him. Find a local church to attend that teaches the bible. Listen to the teaching, and double check it for yourself in your bible as you learn that what is taught is what the bible says. Ask lots of question! You want to get to know other believers and let them get to know you.

I pray that God leads you and shields you, that you will guard your heart in Christ Jesus as you begin your journey (Proverbs 4:23).

You have a whole new life to discover! God bless you and establish your faith in Him. Enjoy the beauty of this new moment.
