Like a Child

When we’re young all we want to do is grow up. When we’ve grown up, all we want to do is look younger and be told we don’t look our age. We want to enjoy the freedoms we enjoyed as a child.

Matthew 18:3 (AMP)

and (Jesus) said, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, unless you repent [that is, change your inner self—your old way of thinking, live changed lives] and become like children [trusting, humble, and forgiving], you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

What is being like a child?

The amplified bible describes being like a child as trusting, humble and forgiving. Every child is born trusting, needing to trust caregivers. But a child can only continue to trust if that caregiver is trustworthy.

We know that we have a heavenly father who is trustworthy in love and all that is good comes from Him.

Matthew 7:11 (NLT)

So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

James 1:17 (NIV)

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

The bible says we must humble ourselves (1 Peter 5:6; James 4:10). This is an act of surrender that comes from an awareness and admission of pride.

The bible also says we must forgive others, not to carry grievances against others, because God has forgiven us for our own sins (Colossians 3:13).

We could also say being like a child is optimistic and hopeful. The bible speaks extensively about hope and the importance of it. In fact, it says God is the God of hope and that trusting in Him (like a child) will fill us with joy and peace and we will overflow with hope.

Romans 15:13 (NIV)

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Micah 7:7 (NIV)

But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.

Think about how you can change and become like a child. Humble yourself before God. Who do you need to extend forgiveness to? Are you finding it hard to be optimistic about something? Choose to believe and trust in the Father, who gives all good things to His children and your hope will continue to overflow.
