Autonomy Is God’s Enemy
In You
Autonomy is the right to self-govern. From a personal stand-point, autonomy is a desire to have our own way. We do not always yield our autonomy to God. Instead of giving Him our life, we hold on to the parts we don’t want Him to touch. Autonomy is God’s Enemy in you.
Autonomy has its root in separateness and rebellion.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
A kingdom is a territory ruled by a monarch. In a kingdom, citizens don’t vote. The king is responsible for the well-being of His people. God’s kingdom is incorruptible, unshakable and righteous.
A kingdom is not a democracy. It’s important that the Christ-follower realises this essential difference between the way we live in the world and the way we live under God, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Â
As long as we fight for our autonomy as a Christian we are fighting for separateness from God. How can our lives as Christians be effective and receive His blessing if we do this? We need to understand His love.
Jeremiah 31:3 (NIV)
The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
So, where does our desire for separateness come from? Sin. Sin is a campaign for autonomy.
Isaiah 59:1-2 (NLV)
See, the Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save, and His ear is not closed that it cannot hear. But your wrong-doings have kept you away from your God. Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.Â
We suffer because of our desire for autonomy.
It ends up being a toss-up between two slaveries – slavery to sin or slavery to Christ. Where does each one take us?
Romans 6:16 (NLT)
Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
Consider what's important to you today. If the Lord is, surrender your heart to Him afresh and let Him lead you gently along His paths of righteousness.
