Immortality

How brief our life is. It is given to us and it is taken from us. Our life has a measure and that measure only comes from God, who made the heavens and the earth. Our time is in His hands.

Psalm 39:4-5 (NLV)

“O Lord, let me know my end and how many days I have to live. Let me know that I do not have long to stay here. You have made each of my days as long as a hand is wide. My whole life is nothing in Your eyes. Every man at his best is only a breath.

From the beginning of our life, when we are so vulnerable and completely dependent on others to care for us, until the time of our end, when we again become vulnerable and dependent on others to care for us, God is in heaven, reigning. From babies we grow and then have babies of our own. As we receive God's legacy for us, we carry the responsibility to pass it on to our own.

Although our lives are like a meadow flower, blown quickly away, our lives are not over. Those made righteous in Christ have a beautiful heritage forever. Our lives will continue to have meaning, growth and purpose after our flower has bloomed and dropped again to the ground to become dust.

God loves those who fear Him. Those who look to Him are saved and His righteousness reaches out to our own children. Trust in the Lord and do good, and you and your family will surely see His salvation and experience His glory.

Psalm 103:13-18 (NIV)

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

We begin each day with the potential to achieve God’s will, but do we live each day with that intent? One day, we will be given the opportunity to give an account for our lives to the Lord. Will it be a joyful occasion, where He will extend His hand to you? Or will it be fearful?

Every day we are preserved to live our lives to glorify Him. It’s a beautiful gift. But one day, we’ll be glorifying Him face to face and living a new life. We will receive immortality, eternal life.

Have you given much thought to the things you’re doing now that will be used as an investment into that future?

1 Corinthians 3:13 (NIV)

their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

Psalm 90:12 (NLT)

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.
