Daily Exercise
Are you a fitness freak, a try-hard, a wanna-be, an armchair critic or a couch potato?
The bible takes the use of our bodies seriously. The way we treat them sexually is discussed frankly, but we can also accept a wider directive to look after the health of our bodies because we are members of Christ Himself and temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:15,19).
1 Corinthians 6:20 (NIV) says,
…you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies.
Philippians 3:19 (NLV) makes it even more clear.
Their god is their stomach. They take pride in things they should be ashamed of. All they think about are the things of this world. In the end they will be destroyed.
Proverbs 23:20-21 (NASB)
Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags.
This is a warning against letting bodily pleasures captivate us. The bible is forthright about the need to prioritise things in life prudently; to look after our bodies and not waste our lives chasing excess.
1 Corinthians 10:31 (BSB)
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
The bible takes seriously the condition of our eternal soul. When we focus on His glory in whatever we do there’s no competition.
1 Timothy 4:8 (NLT)
“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
The benefits that we seek in this life are not insignificant to Him. Jesus desires that we reach up to Him in faith for everything. Mark 5:36 says He encouraged a seeker of healing by the words, “Just believe.”
Believing toward goals is a daily exercise of faith. Looking after our bodies is pleasing to the Lord and glorifies Him. Looking after our spiritual health and fitness because of the benefits for the life to come is even more important. Both, take a daily routine to get lasting results.
