What life situation do you find yourself in?
Having been filled with life, people around you, love supporting you, do you find yourself alone now? Bereft of what you cherished? Maybe what you desired most never came to you.
Having followed the LORD were your dreams let down and you blame God? Have you now constructed your own religion to suit yourself?
Having tried to satisfy what you thought you needed with money, cravings, power in a career or power over people, do you feel satisfied? Or do you just need more?
Having been entrusted with much, did you mishandle things and are running from the conviction inside yourself but blaming others? Your actions were criticised. Your words were twisted. Your intent was rejected. Do you feel hard-done by?
Having been diligent in the little things were you waiting for God for the big things but they haven’t come? Having been faithful are you now wondering if you were wrong all this time?
Having been seeking God did you think He would elevate you? Did you see the people you thought were important for you, made all the connections you thought you needed, and ended up pursuing people instead of God?
Whatever the circumstances, perhaps you now feel empty. You might have people around you or you might be alone, but either way, you feel deeply let down, shaken or wounded.
The LORD will come and find you if you open your eyes and your heart.
1 Kings 19:3-9 (NIV)
Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night.
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
The LORD sees you. Even when you're pushing Him away, He provides for you though you may not recognise it's Him. He never leaves you or abandons you.
Hebrews 13:5 (AMP)
Let your character [your moral essence, your inner nature] be free from the love of money [shun greed—be financially ethical], being content with what you have; for He has said, “I will never [under any circumstances] desert you [nor give you up nor leave you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless], nor will I forsake or let you down or relax My hold on you [assuredly not]!”
God is all-knowing and His resources are limitless. He will use every trial you find yourself in to make something good come out of it – you can be sure there are lessons He is wanting to teach you, as a good Father would teach his children right from wrong. You can be sure He is training you, shaping you, showing you His standard. Even if you’re not looking, you can be sure He’s placed someone in your path, or put a situation in your life to call you to Him out of your need. If you’re not willing to accept Him, He won’t force you. He’ll wait. He’ll let you pursue the life you think is better. He’ll watch and wait. And when – if – you’re willing to look to Him and seek Him, the LORD will come and find you.
It happened to me.
I was suffocating with depression and an almost paralysing fear of life and the power people had over me. I hid myself behind a mask of confident vitality, expressing myself too openly, seeking attention that only deepened my anxieties. I knew God but I didn’t know God. I wanted to love God but I didn’t believe He really loved me, the hidden me, the hidden rooms inside me. How could He? They sought attention from physical pleasures and substances. They sought gratification at an addictive level. I didn’t even realise I was losing myself at that expense. Such a huge price to pay, just because I couldn’t believe God was a God of mercy and compassion – over me – and He was for me, and He wanted to show Himself to me.
I had a dream one night.
I was in a blizzard. The colours in the dream were whites and blues. Wind and snow howled around me. Everything was in a white-out, including noise. I could barely see in front of me but I was aware I was in a forest. I was trying to find my way through the blizzard, feeling totally lost and completely alone. Then I felt a presence behind me. I turned around and Jesus stood there, covered in snow, looking at me with tears on his face that were turning to ice in the cold. He stood back from me, was waiting for me, watching over me, but not able to help me until I asked for His help. I turned away from Him and tried to go on but I was compelled to look back at Him once more. He had His arms outstretched to me. His eyes were filled with sorrow. And then I woke up.
I was crushed and bruised by life. My sensitive spirit had been broken and mishandled and I had lost my bearings. Jesus was showing me He wanted to be my help, my Saviour, my compass if I would let him. He was showing me He would take me out of the storm if I would let Him. All I had to do was walk into His waiting arms.
I wish I could say I turned to Him then, but I didn’t. I carried on trying to find my way through the blizzard on my own. Finally, one day after years of trying to find myself only to lose myself further, I saw my life for what it was. I finally walked toward Jesus. The first thing He showed me and opened my eyes to was His love. He showed me He had seen the hidden rooms inside my mind all the time and still loved me. He felt compassion for me instead of judgement. He had watched over me until I was ready to receive His forgiveness for destroying the life He had given me.
Isaiah 42:3 (NLT)
He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. He will bring justice to all who have been wronged.
He will do the same for you. He is waiting in the blizzard, in the scorching heat, whatever your life has become. Jesus took it all on Himself so you could walk free from it and find a peaceful, spacious place to live in Him.
You don’t have to figure it out yourself. He will help you. He promises to.
John 10:3-5, 10-11 (NCV)
The one who guards the door opens it for him. And the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he brings all his sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger. They will run away from him because they don’t know his voice.”
A thief comes to steal and kill and destroy, but I came to give life—life in all its fullness. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep.
