Sometimes, something will happen in life that peels your heart like sunburnt skin. It might not be a big event. Maybe it's a conversation or an exchange that rubs on an emotional raw patch and re-bruises the same spot as it always does. It's a wearing and a tearing that feels like a worn-out old shoe that you really want to throw away but you can't because you haven't been able to buy a new pair yet.
We may need to set aside time to consider what changes we can make to navigate a different approach to that repeated situation, reaction or response. What is it that we need that's going to nourish us? How can we talk to ourselves differently? What other expectations would we like to have? What alternatives are there to the response we normally struggle through? Are we ready to put those changes in place to cultivate a different reaction and ultimately a different outcome? In what way do we wish to grow?
If there is a person or a situation in our life that causes that constant rub but can’t be removed, change must, therefore, come from within ourselves.
God is able to renew us and bring healing to emotional tearing but we still have to do some thinking. We still need to recognise, accept and honour real needs that we may have been ignoring, burying or even rejecting. We still need to put practical steps in place to meet a real need we might feel never gets met. We can ask God to direct our thoughts so that what we put in place will be good for us.
Proverbs 2:6 (CEV)
All wisdom comes from the Lord, and so do common sense and understanding.
As a Christian we might have a tendency to remain passively ‘waiting on God’ to do something for us but He might be expecting us to make use of things He’s placed around us already. Use tools to help bring insight, like books on a relevant subject matter. Foster enriching friendships. Register old patterns of thought that are limiting or even causing pain and decide what new patterns of thought you need to implement instead. Dig deeper. Sift through the gravel so you can find the gold nuggets God is waiting to help you find.
Romans 12:2 (NCV)
Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.
Retrain yourself and carve out a new path with God guiding you from His Word. Study what the bible has to say about the changes you need.
James 1:6 (GWT)
When you ask for something, don’t have any doubts. A person who has doubts is like a wave that is blown by the wind and tossed by the sea.
Soften your thoughts, balance your emotional reaction with the mature perspective you’d prefer and put your faith into place. Carry yourself differently. Help yourself. Sit with God and yourself and make a plan to help you see things in a way that will bring greater expectation, hope, and joy.
Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
If we ask God to show us what we need, He will direct us, and change can come. Beautiful, life-giving change that is rich, maturing and complete, no matter what the rub.
James 1:5 (TLB)
If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him.
